The Orchard City

Campbell’s old nickname, from the orchards, drying yards and canneries at the heart of its early economy.

For decades the town lived on fruit: prunes, apricots, peaches, pears, cherries and walnuts grown in the orchards around it, then dried, canned and shipped from yards by the railroad. Travel writers still call Campbell the Orchard City, a title that ties it to its fruit industry.

The name lives on in Orchard City Drive, Orchard City Green, and the fruit-and-blossom plaques set into the downtown sidewalks. Jeanette Watson’s history of the town is titled Campbell, the Orchard City.
