Campbell High School opened on September 14, 1900, with 35 students. It moved to the southeast corner of Winchester and Campbell in 1904, and built its present campus on the northwest corner in 1936. It closed in 1980, and the city bought the campus on August 1, 1985, for its Community Center. Its three buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. (Wikipedia)
The Heritage Theatre, designed by William H. Weeks, opened in 1938 as the school auditorium. It closed in 1982 over structural concerns and stayed dark for twenty years until volunteers formed the Friends of the Heritage Theatre; it reopened with 800 seats in 2004. (Campbell Chamber)
On May 11, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt planted a coast redwood on the site of the original high school. The tree was removed in 1964 when Winchester Boulevard was widened, and a redwood at the corner of Campbell Avenue and Winchester Boulevard carries its plaque. (City of Campbell)
Across Winchester Boulevard at 11 East Campbell Avenue, the Mediterranean Revival Campbell Union Grammar School, also by Weeks, opened in 1923 and was the district’s only grammar school until 1946. (Wikipedia)
