French prune orchards spread across the valley in the 1880s; Foote’s 1888 history records the orchards planted around Campbell’s Station in those years. Prunes were the heart of the drying yards and of Sunsweet.
The French Prune is one of six fruits on the downtown Agricultural Heritage Plaques, and Campbell’s May festival began in the late 1970s as the Prune Festival.
