The Pruneyard

At Campbell and Bascom Avenues, just east of Highway 17, the Pruneyard’s shops, cinema, hotel and three office towers stand on what was the Brynteson Ranch.

Discover The Pruneyard

Fred Sahadi bought the Brynteson Ranch in 1968 and developed the PruneYard as an upscale mixed-use center, completed in 1970. Its three-screen cinema was the first business to open, in 1969, and one of its three office towers of 1970 is the tallest building in the area outside downtown San Jose. (Wikipedia)

In the late 1970s the center was drawn into a free-speech dispute with local high school students. In PruneYard Shopping Center v. Robins, decided on June 9, 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld California’s protection of peaceful free speech in the public areas of private shopping centers. (Wikipedia, Oyez)

A major renovation began in 2017, and Regency Centers bought the retail portion in 2019. (Wikipedia, San José Spotlight)

The Los Gatos Creek Trail passes behind the center, with an access point at its northwest corner. (Wikipedia)
