Campbell Fruit Growers’ Union

The growers’ cooperative of 1892 that took over Campbell’s big drying yard.

Orchardists formed the union in 1892 and bought Frank Buxton’s drying works by the tracks, with about 16 acres of drying yards. In 1894 they built a brick storehouse near Central Avenue that still stands. In August 1906 the San Jose Herald reported about 75 tons of prunes a day passing through.

Support faded as growers sold elsewhere when prices rose, and the union sold out to George E. Hyde & Company in 1913.
