About fifty growers formed the Campbell Cooperative Dryer in 1937 and built a dehydrator with four tunnels south of Sunsweet Plant 1. Many farmers found it safer than sun-drying, which an early rain could ruin.
By 1948 it had forty-eight tunnels, the largest dehydrator in the world, and dried a record 14,965 tons of fruit that year.
