The volunteer fire department began in the 1910s. Its early volunteers bought their own badges, and at first were called out by church bells.
By the 1930s the volunteers went to fires by bicycle so they could cut through orchards and lift their bikes over fences. Newspapers wrote about the Fire Laddies of the Bicycle Fire Department, and newsreel crews came to film them.
